What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine (approved by FDA in 2002) that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows. Botox works temporarily (about 3-4 months) to reduce “expression lines”, meaning that if you are using facial muscles to “express” by frowning, smiling or raising your brows repetitively, you will start developing permanent lines. Botox works by preventing contraction of those muscles.
Botox cosmetic should only be injected by a physician, or PA , Registered Nurse under supervision of a physician. Botox vials are manufactured by Allergan in 2 different single use containers. They are 50 unit and 100 unit vials. They are both labeled “single patient use” in Nevada. Since the “Endoscopy Center” scare in the state of Nevada, the Board did advise health practitioners to comply with single patient use vials, and NO sharing. However, Botox cosmetic vials are very expensive to purchase for physicians, and patients are not often willing to purchase the entire 50 or 100 unit vials due to its expense. Patients, therefore frequent medical spas who offer Botox at a cheaper price per unit by only selling less units ,therefore having to share vials. This is not OUR PRACTICE!
Your single use Botox vial is opened in front of the patient, show to the patient, emptied and discarded in front of the patient. This is the standard practice of Dr. Youmans.
